Image for 2-14-2011 - Happy V-day

I hope you had a Happy Valentine's Day. My sweet girl showered candy on me. She hid sweets all over the house, I'm still finding them. I have a lot of love in my life from my wife and family and friends. I hope you are as lucky.

Image for 2-13-2011 - Progress

I got a fair chunk of writing done yesterday (I know, I'm a day late) on my "Reluctant Sadist" book project. Worked on Chapter eleven that collects underground comix art I did for other publications. I was surprised at how much I did and I wonder if I had stayed with it, where I might be today. I suffer from the jack-of-all-trades curse. I can do a lot of things moderately well; well enough that I could make a mark in any one area. But, as it has gone, I've dabbled. I did devote myself to sculpture for a number of years, but even then I explored different styles and subjects. In the past twenty five years I have gone from comic book style drawing and monster make-up work to sculpture and writing (poetry, non-fiction articles and a feature film screenplay) to painting and acting. I love it all. So, here I am back 'round the horn and writing about the old comix work. Will it lead to my return to that world? Stay tuned to find out...

Dead bird

It's been a long time since I've posted a "Dead-Bird-on-the-Beach" photo, so here you go (though he's on the grass, dead grass, not the beach, but it works for me). I've passed this bird carcass several times on my longer hikes down Shore Dr. and finally had the camera along and the light was good.

There is an old Samurai say, "Every morning make up your mind how to die. Every evening freshen your mind in the thought of death." This bird reminded me of that saying. The idea that we don't last forever. That thought urges me on to do more, see more, pursue life and not surrender.

Frost on the windshield. Winter is on the way out. The day's are warming now and the birds are happy. But the nights are often still cold; down in the twenties, which is cold for us here in the southeastern Virginia. Cold enough to knit this ghostly lace on the windows and across the frozen puddles.

happy friday!

dah -- Just figured out how to take a picture with my phone and upload it directly to the blog! Yeah, I got an inexpensive phone, but it works pretty good.

Image for 2-10-2011 - Old Man Winter

Winter returned to southeast Virginia last night. I awoke before dawn to find heavy, wet snow covering everything. We got 2-4 inches; not enough to keep me home, but enough to make the drive in  beautiful.

A lot of people around here whine about the cold and snow, but I love it.

Bring it on!

Image for Feb. 8, 2010 - Jeff Maisey

I had dinner tonight with my old friend Jeff Maisey at Cogan's Instant Art Bar in Ghent (Norfolk, Va).

Jeff and I have been friends for over twenty-five years. We've had a few adventures. Hiked in the mud and rain in cold in Scotland and in the mountains of Virginia. Run the streets of New Orleans and Cleveland. Been to a couple of NFL football games. He's got the wanderlust bad, not unlike myself. We are always planning or dreaming about the next odyssey. Tonight's topic was Germany and Prague and Amsterdam and Dublin and, and, and...

Jeff is a survivor. He's one of those lemonade guys. He got laid off from his job a couple of years ago at the bottom of the economic implode and bounced back launching his own monthly publication, VEER magazine. Full disclosure, I did the web site and do a little here and there for VEER. Jeff is expanding his empire and just last week added a new pub to his stable called "Afr-Am". Much success old boy.

Another piece of art from the mighty Weaverwerx archive, that I recently scanned for my "Reluctant Sadist" book project. This was a cover I did for the long gone and long missed local magazine "Catharsis". Ah, those were the days.

Happy Friday! I got home from work and did a quick two and a half mile hike. It was after dark. For the longest time, I would never hike after dark. It was conditioning. It's dark, I sit in my recliner. Game over. I've been trying to change that behavior. I snapped this on the hoof; a random photo flash on the side of the road.

My friend Robb Ritchey.

We had dinner tonight and he reluctantly allowed himself to be my "image-of-the-day" subject. The joint we dined in was a chain-restaurant place that goes for the comfortable nostalgia atmosphere that seems to appeal more and more to me the older I get. With that in mind, I gave the photo a sepia tone treatment just for fun.

Robb and I have been friends from nearly fourteen years now. He's the rare breed of "work friend" that has kept in touch through the years. We've worked together in three different companies and probably will again one day. He's a solid, laid back, loyal friend that anyone would be lucky to have on their side. Salute!

Image for February 2, 2011

This is a self-portrait sketch I did back in the mid-nineteen eighties. I dug it out while working on a book project to collect together all the artwork from my time doing underground comix. Progress has been slow lately, but I hope to get back on track and finish the dang book.

Image for January 31, 2011 - winter

It was cold today. We've actually been having a real winter for a change this year. That's fine by me. The older I get, the more I like the cold weather and even welcome the snow. I'm sure many of the millions of people preparing for the next "Monster Winter Storm" that's cutting through middle America would beg to disagree with me.

Image for January 30, 2011 - JAVA

Today's shot is of an old fridge magnet that I made back in the 1990s. It is a Java nut, a victim of too much coffee consumption. Note the blocks of pure caffeine sticking out of his head.

My buddy Ralf Schulze has decided to join me on the post-a-day challenge! (Ralf's Blog - Aardvark Farms) I've known Ralf for twenty three years, maybe more. We met through our underground comix and have stayed in touch on and off through the years. The photo is of a bronze sculpture that Ralf did a long time ago. It now lives in my home office, keeping company with some my tiki mugs. Ralf is still doing some cool comix art and recently has also been expanding into the world of animation and video (Ralf's Youtube Channel). Check out his stuff.

Got out for a walk tonight and finished on the beach. I hit 59 miles for the month so far. I need to average 58 miles per month to hit my goal for this year of 700 miles. A good day it was.

On the commute home, I found myself behind this fantastically painted car. Only managed one quick picture before I lost him in the traffic. Have never seen this car before, but hope I come across it again sometime so I can get a better shot of it. I love car art, especially home-made car art. This looks professionally done, but you never know. Looks like they spent all their dough on the paint job and had nothing left to fix the ragtop.

Image for January 21, 2011 - Flat Tire

Flat tire.
Drag.
Driving home from work tonight, I heard and felt that awful thump, thump, thump of a flat. I was heading to the grocery store and was nearly there when I had to pull over. I've changed a few flats in my time, so quickly set out to mount the spare and continue on with my weekend. The first nut came off with no problem, the second, not so co-operative. It was reluctant, then stubborn, then... SNAP! The damn bolt snapped off! Happy Friday. I pushed on trying to finish the job and get the spare put on, but one of the nuts would not go on, so I had to call road assistance. Frustrated, I waited in the cold wondering when I could get my weekend back on-track and then saw an ambulance speed by. I then realized, "I have no real problem.".
