Wé Mask, Me Mask

Happy Friday! A little video experiment this week. There is a popular theory that all art is self-portraiture, which was going through my mind when I finished this week's drawing. Upon comparing my interpretation of this "Wé Mask" from the Côte d’Ivoire region of Africa, I noticed that I had drawn the face longer, stretching the original's roundness into a more naturally proportioned human face. When I looked more closely, I saw my own face. It's my subconscious lurking there under the skin ready to dance!

I found this fierce and beautiful mask on the Instagram feed of "amyasnaegele" and would encourage you to click through the link to read the detailed background information that Amyas Naegele has provided.

I really love the red around the eyes and will draw this mask again, next time larger and in color.

Where I live now, it's cold and there's snow and it is grey, but the days are slowly getting longer. It feels good to drop into art, make marks, play with the images in a video.

What are you making these days?

Here are the still images...

52 Fridays - The Devil You Know

Happy Halloween! For this week's drawing, I pulled from the archive this demonic selfie from a Halloween some twenty years ago, so this is also a self-portrait. My passion for art and sculpture was born from a love of monster movies. I grew up dreaming that I'd be the next Rick Baker or Ray Harryhausen or Dick Smith, so I learned to draw and sculpt and do make-up. I'll always be a "monster kid".

The Devil You Know... and what devils are loose in the land? It seems like these days, all the demons are running wild. Good opportunity to push back with some love and light and maybe a little of your own dark power.

Wishing you some scary good fun this weekend!

52 Fridays - Self-Portrait From the Future

I want more beans! Or at least I think I will eleven years from now. Why "more beans", probably because that's all there will be available to eat, cans of beans and SPAM, but I've sworn off SPAM, so bring on the beans! I guess it's optimistic to think that I'll be alive eleven years from now, but lately, like the last five years or so, I've been feeling the opposite. I don't think the "world will end",  just that it's going to get more chaotic and less pleasant for human life. But what do I know? I'll check in again in eleven years and we will all see what is indeed up.

Zahdah and see you next week!
