Image for 5-15-11 - Rain Barrel Time

Got the rain barrel deployed for the season. I like using rain water for watering our plants. Just makes good sense and saves some dough on the water bill. Trying to grow potatoes-in-a-bag again this year. Last year was a bit of a disaster with no growth or potatoes, but feeling more optimistic this year with some good, sprouting taters to start with. Now we just need some rain to fill the barrel and away we go!

  1. I had totally forgotten that you had this! I'm gonna have to steal your idea - I bought some herb seeds for the kids to plant at work and this is the perfect way for them to see recycling/green ideas in action!

  2. This may seem like a silly question, but how does the water get in? I don't see a downspout or anything. or will you just keep the top open?

  3. Ralf- There's a hole in the top covered with a screen to keep leaves and twigs out. Somebody do use a down spout to directly flow the water in. None of my down spouts are accessible, so I put the barrel under a spot where the roof is sloped and the runoff strong. One good rain and the barrel (90 gallons) fills right up!
