They Have Arrived - 2-27-15 - Image-a-day

I found this jellyfish on the beach today. It was an odd sight in the middle of winter. This strange, organic jewel looked to me like an alien life form or maybe even a tiny flying saucer.

Meet "Bo-San" the Latest Lo-Fi-Ga - 2/26/15 - Image-a-day

I thought I'd take a break from posting another picture of snow as I'm sure you are probably getting tired of the cold and snow and winter. As this was a "snow day" for me, which meant a day off of work as my work place was closed, I put the time to good use and finished off a few things that have been lying around the studio for much too long.

Allow me to introduce the latest Lo-Fi-Ga, "Bo-San". He is number six in the ongoing and open-ended series of miniature, neo-primitive carvings. Like of the other Lo-Fi-Ga's, "Bo-San" was carved from a Hickory Nut Husk.

DAMN DIRTY SNOWMAN! - 2/25/15 - Image-a-day

I got a walk on the beach after work today. Even though it warmed up to the mid-forties today, there was still a lot of ice and snow on the beach. Along a particular lonely stretch, I happened across this damn, dirty snowman with seaweed hair and lopsided grin. He was a kindred soul to my solo stumble under the winter sky. Sometimes I feel frozen in place. It can be hard to see any progress in my life except for the hand of time greying my beard and setting crow's feet on my eyes. One day the shadow will come for me and I hope that day is a long way off. Before my time is done, "I have a mind to misbehave", as the "Firefly" quote goes. Many adventures that I've rehearsed in my mind's eye. Places to go, people to meet and art to create. Damn, dirty snowman...

Who Are You? - 2/24/15 - Image-a-day

Another snow storm came this afternoon just in time for the afternoon commute and it turned the drive into a "shit show". A drive that usually takes forty minutes became a two and a half hour white-knuckle grind. There were one hundred and eleven accidents between 2pm and 7pm in Tidewater today and I am glad to say that I was not one of them.

Today's image/video is my homage to a scene from one of my favorite episodes of Louis C.K.

Helena's Owl - 2/23/15 - Image-a-day

Today's image is a wonderful drawing of an owl created by Helena, the daughter of a good friend. She has drawn many pictures of owls inspired by the ones that live in her backyard. Helena has a good eye for form and texture already and is only nine years old. I can't wait to see all the art she's going to make in the future.

Paying Respect to Dino - 2/22/15 - Image-a-day

Finished a fine weekend in Durham, NC with a slushy hike on the American Tobacco Trail. We headed north from the Duke Tower making our way along the mostly clear path. A couple of miles down the way, we found an old friend, the big, green, weathered, friendly Brontosaur that lives in the woods. A local once told me the story of the Dino and how his head and neck were stolen and retrieved recently. How there was talk of tearing him down because he was falling apart, but the community rallied and found a way to restore him, so now he still stands. I think every neighborhood should have a dinosaur of it's own.

Nevermore - 2/21/15 - Image-a-day

Catching a few indie horror flicks at the Nevermore Film Fest in Durham, NC this weekend. This is the seventh year that my friend Dave and I have made the trip. The crew always decorates the Carolina Theater with all manner of gruesome delight. This was one of my favorites.

Late Night at the Izakaya - 2/20/15 - Image-a-day

Had some fun Friday night hanging out with my good friend Dave at a new Izakaya in Durham, NC called "Dashi". Nothing better than laughing and talking with an old friend in a hip place.

Alien World - 2/19/15 - Image-a-day

Another image from my beach hike yesterday. This is a chunk of ice that was sculpted by the high tide from the bay. There was a long row all the way down the beach of these organic, alien shapes. How can you compete with mother nature when it comes to creating abstract art?

Times are Hard for Dreamers... 2/18/15 - Image-a-day

I got a brilliant walk on the beach today. The weather was a bit better, no more snow and the sun came out and warmed things up. Despite that,  where I worked was closed again, so the second "snow day" and I was glad to get it.

I saw many wonderful things on the beach, so many things that I'd have no problem filling this "image-a-day" project for the next couple of months. Out of all of those images, I have landed on a dead bird. I saw more then one of these kind of birds on the beach and it made me speculate that this species did not fare well in the cold weather. Look at the delicate, flipper feet and long lovely neck. Sad that this sweet animal is gone.

A Very Cool Patio - 2/17/15 - Image-a-day

Woke up to five inches of snow under a layer of ice. Finally got the snow day from work I was hoping for and I made good use of it by wrapping up a few art projects that have been sitting around too long.

Snow on the Beach - 2/16/15 - Image-a-day

Tidewater finally received a proper taste of winter today when "Winter Storm Octivia" rolled in. At first there were just a few small flakes gently floating around and then it got more serious and then there was no question that the snow was here to stay. By the time I got home from work, there was an inch or two settled over everything. I got out on the beach and walked for a couple of miles enjoying the cold and wind and fine, powdery snow bringing stillness and quiet. It's a rare and beautiful moment to walk on a beach during a snow storm.

You Shall Not Pass - 2/15/15 - image-a-day

I took a six mile hike today. It was clear and cold, mid-twenties which is the coldest hike I've taken this winter. Not many people out and about, but there were a few hardy souls trying to disc golf. Last night we had a vicious wind storm which claimed a few trees. In the park I came across this casualty, the top thirty feet of one of the tall pines was sheared off and nearly took out the footbridge. I got there just as the park workers were blocking off the path from anyone who thought it might be a good idea to try and go under the fallen tree.
