Dead bird

It's been a long time since I've posted a "Dead-Bird-on-the-Beach" photo, so here you go (though he's on the grass, dead grass, not the beach, but it works for me). I've passed this bird carcass several times on my longer hikes down Shore Dr. and finally had the camera along and the light was good.

There is an old Samurai say, "Every morning make up your mind how to die. Every evening freshen your mind in the thought of death." This bird reminded me of that saying. The idea that we don't last forever. That thought urges me on to do more, see more, pursue life and not surrender.

Frost on the windshield. Winter is on the way out. The day's are warming now and the birds are happy. But the nights are often still cold; down in the twenties, which is cold for us here in the southeastern Virginia. Cold enough to knit this ghostly lace on the windows and across the frozen puddles.

dah -- Just figured out how to take a picture with my phone and upload it directly to the blog! Yeah, I got an inexpensive phone, but it works pretty good.

Image for 2-10-2011 - Old Man Winter

Winter returned to southeast Virginia last night. I awoke before dawn to find heavy, wet snow covering everything. We got 2-4 inches; not enough to keep me home, but enough to make the drive in  beautiful.

A lot of people around here whine about the cold and snow, but I love it.

Bring it on!

Today's image was inspired by my buddy's Casey blog, or at least some of his posts. This is a goblet of Allagash BLACK and it was very tasty.

Image for Feb. 8, 2010 - Jeff Maisey

I had dinner tonight with my old friend Jeff Maisey at Cogan's Instant Art Bar in Ghent (Norfolk, Va).

Jeff and I have been friends for over twenty-five years. We've had a few adventures. Hiked in the mud and rain in cold in Scotland and in the mountains of Virginia. Run the streets of New Orleans and Cleveland. Been to a couple of NFL football games. He's got the wanderlust bad, not unlike myself. We are always planning or dreaming about the next odyssey. Tonight's topic was Germany and Prague and Amsterdam and Dublin and, and, and...

Jeff is a survivor. He's one of those lemonade guys. He got laid off from his job a couple of years ago at the bottom of the economic implode and bounced back launching his own monthly publication, VEER magazine. Full disclosure, I did the web site and do a little here and there for VEER. Jeff is expanding his empire and just last week added a new pub to his stable called "Afr-Am". Much success old boy.
